NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) – Governor DeSantis visited Newberry today with a mission to defend Floridians’ right to choose when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine.

With cities across the country mandating the vaccine for employees, Governor DeSantis said Florida residents can be sure he won’t allow that to happen.

“We can’t let these people be pushed aside, we can’t allow their jobs to be destroyed,” DeSantis said.

He said while he encouraged everyone to speak with their doctor about getting vaccinated, it is unconstitutional for it to be mandatory.

DeSantis said if a government agency forces the firing as a condition of employment, she will face a hefty fine.

“You will be fined $5,000 for each violation, and so if you look at places here in Alachua County, like the city of Gainesville, I mean that’s potentially millions and millions of dollars in fines. “, did he declare.

Since the announcement last week that the federal government was requiring the vaccine, Congresswoman Kat Cammack has said she has been using her power to fight for what is right.

“I will introduce legislation to dismantle the authority given to OSHA and other federal agencies used to enforce Biden’s unconstitutional order,” Cammack said.

A Gainesville paramedic and firefighter said he felt betrayed by the vaccine mandate. He said he was not anti-vaccine, but he was anti-mandate.

As someone who has worked on the front lines throughout the pandemic, Jonathan Cicio said it was insulting to be told he didn’t know what was best for him, but the government did. .

“It’s twisted into a false narrative that anyone who doesn’t want to get vaccinated is selfish.”

Cicio said he has COVID-19 and is naturally immune to antibodies.

“If these vaccines are as good as they say, get yours, and mine shouldn’t affect you. But you can’t have it both ways, you can’t say they’re very effective and be careful, you don’t have yours,” he said.

According to the AP, COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death among US law enforcement.

As of last month, 75% of Lake City Fire Department personnel were out with COVID-19 or in quarantine.

Governor DeSantis has said his fight against President Biden’s term in office is a necessary fight.

“That’s not how our constitution works and governors like me are designed to be on the front lines of pushing back when the federal government, especially a president, goes too far.”

The state has a law against vaccine passports which applies to any government entity requiring proof of vaccination.

The Department of Health is responsible for enforcing the rule once it comes into force on September 16.
