The Codex Astartes details the doctrine of the Space Marine Chapters, compiled and written by the Primarch of the Ultramarines, Roboute Guilliman. While not every Chapter follows the Codex completely, it lays the foundation for their organisation and tactics.

About this series:
The Adeptus Astartes are genetically engineered warriors, created by the Emperor of Mankind and tempered by centuries of bloody warfare. The Index Astartes series explores in detail the many elements of the Space Marines armies on and off the battlefield, from the newly inducted Scouts to the vast battle-barges that carry them to war.

    Downloaded a "sample" after reading all the terrible reviews and the sample consists of 4 pages. Pages 1 is the front cover, page 2 just has "Codex Astartes" written on it, Page 3 is a brief description of the book which can be found in the details section (without bothering to get the sample) and Page 4 is a link to buy it. After the bad reviews and the sample which showed me NOTHING i wil not be buying it. As an addendum - I got the sample for the Dreadnought version of this book to see if it was any better and received the sample for this book again. Poor.

    I didn't get the original Codex Astartes. I expected something similar to the Imperial Army handbook. The cover looks amazing and I had an expectation that the book would outline what the Codex Astartes talked about in the novels was all about. I expected squad formations and tactical and more depth. It's 54/44 Pages long (iPhone/iPad). For the price I was expecting a little multimedia and a quality similar to White Dwarf magazine for something so short. This isn't even close. The chapters are: Intro Founding Chapters Chapter Organisation Squad Organisation There are photos, but these seem to be off boxes. The feeling I had was similar to reading a short for the first time (£1.50 for 11 pages of which the Story accounted for 2 pages). Honestly I was stunned. I genuinely like Gamesworkshop's products, but they are expensive and the price seems to rise and rise multiple times a year. Since 2008 most products have doubled in price. If this is an old product given a electronic format, then it smacks of complacency. While the Horus Heresy books and products are knocking the ball out of the park, this leaves a bitter taste. Product ladders exist for a reason, you start buying products lower down the ladder and as your confidence grows you buy more and more expensive items. Please if you buy this don't take this as an indication of quality elsewhere, it's not.

    I am disappointed with this release from GW, the digital products to date have been great, but this one adds no value. It thinly draws on a number of other sources, I'd recommend the SM codex and Black Libraries Horus Heresy series over this product. If it was a few pence and branded as a guide for parents to understand their kids hobby in a few short pages it would have achieved this goal. As an in depth hobby supplement it is lacklustre.

    I am a huge fan of the original Index Astartes. I knew this wouldn't be those books but I was hoping for something in the same vein. Sadly this and the other digital downloads in the same series are poor imitations of the originals. Most of this (the vast majority) is just rehashed from other sources. I'd happily pay a premium price for quality like the original Index Astartes books but won't be buying anymore of these. Hugely disappointed.
