About the author

Mhairi was born in Scotland in 1976 and has been explaining how to pronounce her name ever since. (With a ‘V’, not an ‘M’. Yes, that’s us crazy Celts for you).

She is based in Nottingham where she used to be a local journalist and now she’s a freelance writer and sometime-blogger, which we all know is code for messing about on Twitter.

She likes drinking wine, eating food and obtaining clothes; all the impressive hobbies. Her best anecdotes involve dislocating her elbow tripping over a briefcase and a very bad flight to New York. She lives with a man and a cat.

    Having previously just read a particularly gory thriller I wanted something a bit lighter to read next. This book is absolutely brilliant! I was annoyed each time I had to put the book down to eat or or do other daily tasks. The wit had me laughing out loud particularly with Ivor's revelations. I'm off now to bandy Mhairi McFarlane's name about in as many conversations as I can.

    I started reading this book at 8:30am, it's now 14:20 of the same day and I can happily say that I've finished it. It's one of the most refreshing books I've read in a long time. The dry and witty humour, the location (I absolutely love Manchester) and the fact that every character plays such an important part to the plot are some of the reasons why I loved it. *spoiler alert* I started second guessing myself by the end of the book, as I thought that the book would finish with Rachel rediscovering herself, but I'm so glad that Rachel and Ben got their happy ending! It's definitely a feel-good book and would highly recommend it to anyone!

    Wish it hadn't ended ! I was completely in the bubble and could not put it down. I'm not a big reader but this book has converted me. If there's more like this out there, count me in. Totally up my street !

    Very accomplished for a first novel - though I guess we shouldn't be too surprised at that as the author is a journalist, after all. I enjoyed this immensely. It had me laughing out loud and even produced a few tears at one particularly poignant point. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this lady's next project.
